List of Documents Required to Open a Demat Account in India

“A Demat account is an account that allows investors to hold their shares in an electronic form.” It’s just like a bank account, wherein you hold all your money and cash transaction entries occur in a bank passbook. Similarly, in a Demat account, certificates of financial instruments like shares, government securities, bonds, mutual funds, etc. stay in electronic form and are debited or credited subsequently. This type of trading account can be opened with zero balance of shares. The procedure to open a Demat account is almost the same across different firms and institutions. Opening an online Demat account is extremely simple. All you need to do is fill in your personal details and submit it along with the below-listed documents.

 

Here’s a detailed list of all documents required to open a Demat account in India.

 

  1. PAN Card: A color scanned copy of the PAN card clearly displaying your photo and name.

 

  1. Address Proof: Lease or sale agreement of residence, passport, ration card, voter identity card, driving license, bank statement or passbook, telephone bill, electricity bill, gas bill and Unique Identification Number (UID) (Aadhaar).

 

  1. Bank Proof: A cancelled cheque with your name on it or the first page of bank statement with your name displayed.

 

  1. Income Proof: Copy of ITR acknowledgment and Demat account holding, Form 16, annual accounts, salary slips, net worth certificate and bank statement.

 

  1. Specimen signature: Only needed for offline transactions subject to digitally signed applications.

 

Existing KYC Verified

If you come under this category, then PAN card and bank proof are mandatory documents, income proof and specimen signature are optional, while address proof is not required.

 

Aadhar Verified (With OTP)

If you come under this category, then PAN card and bank proof are mandatory documents, income proof and specimen signature are optional, while address proof is not required.

 

Non Aadhar Verified

If you come under this category, then PAN card, address proof, and bank proof are mandatory documents, while income proof and specimen signature are optional requirements.

 

Your Demat account will get activated within a few hours of application, and you can start trading immediately. Demat account charges* for opening and annual maintenance can be as minimal as Rs 0 and Rs 650 respectively.
